I picked up Rise and Grind, by Daymond John w/ Daniel Paisner recently, and it’s a serious goldmine of productivity tips.

In it, Daymond John interviews 17 wildly successful people from Catherine Zeta-Jones to real estate mogul Grant Cardone to Wendy Williams, and gets them to spill their work ethic.

They all share how they make the most productive use of their time, and how it got them to crazy megastar status.

I don’t know about you guys, but my “productivity” Pinterest board is about a mile long.

Do I hear “work ethic” and “superstar” in the same sentence? You have my attention.

Each of these people have their own personal way of waking up and taking the day head-on.

This book is full of TONS of really different perspectives of how to SUCCESSFULLY use the same 24 hours we all have in a day.  But the interview that stayed with me was Raymond’s interview with Joel Osteen.

Joel writes 30-minute, very on-point sermons, every single week, for literally millions of people.

His interview really isn’t specifically about how he plans his week to write. It’s actually more about how he keeps his “emotional energy” positive and useful throughout his day.

But in it, he gives a really clear look into how he does it. How he consistently writes his useful, thought-provoking, transformative sermons, and keeps millions of people coming back each week.

Joel Osteen’s a writer.

And writer to writer, I appreciated his method.

LESSON 1: The Structured Work Week

“On Wednesdays [Joel] immerses himself in the news of the day…….Thursdays and Fridays, he’s in his office by seven o’clock in the morning, writing.” -Daymond John

First of all, Joel saves Monday and Tuesday for the busy-work. You know what I mean……..the non-creative, day-to-day, keep-the-office-going stuff.

To us mere mortals, that could mean re-ordering office supplies, clearing our inboxes, or scheduling pins.  (I totally just eye-rolled.)

Then comes Wednesday.  Wednesday is for igniting his creativity, for finding current events & trends.  And for meditating on how he can use them to help his congregation.

Thursday and Friday are for writing, every single week.

A straightforward, 3-day content writing schedule.  One that specifically takes what people are worried about, or excited about, and uses that to help his audience.

Just think, do this once a week and you’ll have 52 high-quality posts this time next year! FIFTY-TWO! I’m proud of you already.

And hey, if you are in full-blown, just-starting-out hustle mode & have time to squeeze in 2 sets of this 3-prong content creation (there are 7 days in a week, after all), that’s 52 posts in 6 months.

LESSON 2: Immerse Yourself in Current Events and Take Inspiration from What is Around You

“…..[Joel] reads, he studies….looking for ideas, sorting through trends and themes and finding……….something that will hopefully speak to his millions of followers….” -Daymond John

Looking for current and on-point stuff to write about.  This guy is hands-down speaking to bloggers specifically.

That’s really our job, isn’t it?

To take what’s “trending” and re-focus it to our audience, to our niche. To take what is on our audience’s minds and use it to help and transform them, in a meaningful way.

When we are just starting out, a lot of blogging how-to sites will tell us to get out as much content as possible. The reality is we need excellent quality content, first and foremost.

This interview gives a great structured-week approach to curating ideas and creating content that is going to resonate with our audiences RIGHT NOW.

Plus, we can take this on and into our writing whenever we want.  Looking for trends weekly, monthly, or even seasonally can give us structure as writers and keep us in the loop with our audience.

After all, we’re here to help – what better way than to get on a schedule of opening our eyes and ears to them?

LESSON 3: Have your Sanctuary

“Joel’s office is like his sanctuary…..where he finds the peace and quiet he needs to explore the big themes…” -Daymond John

You are already investing in yourself by making the commitment to work from home.  You recognize the value in whatever your job is – give it that respect of having a place in your home.  That can mean:

-spending $5,000 to remodel a spare room into an office space,

-spending $500 on a desk and filing cabinet to put in a bedroom corner, or

-shelling out a few dollars on a lap desk or tray, or getting a lightweight bin to store some supplies that you can take wherever you work in your house.

And wherever you do end up working………

Bring things into your space that are uplifting reminders of who you are, where you came from, why you are here now, and where you are going.  No negativity.

LESSON 4: Take Exercise Breaks

“I’m a big believer in being active………….there needs to be a balance.  Physically, spiritually, and emotionally.” -Joel Osteen

Obviously in the interview you can tell this guy has hours and hours of time on Wednesday and Thursday to wander around, exercise, take several walks and anchor his emotional stability.  He has an entire team going strong for the stuff that doesn’t involve his sermon.

I personally have 3 kids and a relatively small window of time away from them for “me” stuff.  But exercise is obviously extremely important.

I also benefit from walking away from my writing once in a while, and coming back with fresh eyes.

So I break out my phone & search for 10-minute at-home workouts on YouTube.  At least I feel like I did SOMEthing.

My favorite right now is Emi Wong on YouTube.  She does the workout with you so you don’t have to keep pausing the video.  That is a HUGE pet peeve of mine.

If you’re looking for more exercise videos, checkout this post, it has 6 at-home workouts.

LESSON 5: Nothing is Perfect – and Nothing Has To Be

“We’re not here because we’re perfect.  I think it’s good to be open with people and let them know that everybody’s dealing with something.  We’re all on a journey.”

-Joel Osteen

Two lessons came at me with this quote:

Number 1 is storytelling.

It’s the easiest and most organic way to gain your readers’ trust.  Take your audience on your journey and open yourself up by sharing your experience.  Especially if you are targeting the right audience, your readers will most likely either be in the same boat as you or be thankful you saved them from a big step backwards!

Number 2 is we are all works in progress.

We have a lot on our plates, every single one of us.  Our business, our children, our marriage, our home, our health, our friends – it’s a lot of responsibility in what always seems like not a lot of time.

But we really are on a journey.

One where we can, once in a while, take a look around……..

Be aware of what we have, keep what we need, drop what we don’t, and keep moving.

Final Thoughts:

Okay, this guy is a total superstar with a dream team of people to do everything else for him so he can wander the world for 3 days absorbing inspiration and letting the words come find him.

Can’t relate.

BUT, we can just take a minute and appreciate his process, we can scale it waaaaaaaay back to our circumstances, which may be…………

-having a (more or less) set schedule for writing.

-getting stuck trying to articulate an idea and stepping out on our front porch for 5 minutes.  Or making a quick phone call to a friend to help center us and clear our minds for our creativity and helpfulness to shine through.

-rounding up our “team” of family and friends.  Relying on them to take some of the load, and show gratitude for their contributions and success.

We can also appreciate and learn from his circumstances…….

This person has millions of people depending on his work. He has a physical congregation of thousands.

Just like us hustling moms, he is a leader, and leaders get pulled in every direction possible.

Yet Joel keeps his transformative content coming every week for the world to see.

He is able to prioritize his writing and keep his audience engaged, TRULY engaged, week after week, month after month, year after year.

It’s a big deal.

No matter what he does, his focus is on helping his community (read: Our audience!!!) and he is therefore able to always come back to a place in his mind where he can gather his thoughts absorb inspiration from the world around him, and write. And write well.

Lastly, definitely pick up Rise and Grind.  Joel Osteen’s interview is just one of FIFTEEN inspiring and motivating heart-to-hearts with 17 absolute success stories.
