How to Organize Your Day as a Stay at Home Mom: 13 Tips
1. Start With The Most Important Tasks, and Organize Around Them.
These can be obvious, like:
- Appointments,
- Going to/from school,
- Self-care time for yourself,
- Bonding time with your partner,
- Any chores that can’t be put off, etc.
Since I work from home, I also have to add important work tasks, to make sure I am hitting my work goals.
Depending on the day, I always shoot for THREE important tasks per day, or my “top three.”
I will even write them in my planner, to keep them at the top of my mind.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://livinglifeasmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/color-code-with-highlight-for-priority.jpg” alt=”picture of planner with top 3 priorities highlighted” title_text=”color code with highlight for priority” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” link_font_size=”19px” link_line_height=”1.6em” ul_font_size=”19px” ul_line_height=”1.5em” ol_font_size=”19px” ol_line_height=”1.6em” quote_font_size=”19px” quote_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”28px” header_2_line_height=”1.6em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_3_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_3_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]
Schedule these tasks into your day, and if you can, sprinkle the rest of your tasks around those things.
If your day comes & goes, and you only got these three important tasks done, that is fantastic! They were important to you, and they’re done. Anything else you were able to accomplish this day is icing on the cake.
A lot of the stay at home mom schedules below plan around their big daily tasks, I guess it works pretty well!

2. Use Nighttime to Prepare for the Next Day
The best thing I ever did was take just one or two daytime tasks that I didn’t like doing, and move them to the evening before. It freed up brain space and I didn’t have to worry about when I would “get to it.”
Some things you may want to move to your evening routine are:
- Putting a load of laundry in the washing machine and setting the delay timer for 8 hours (or for an hour before you usually wake up)
- Picking out your clothes for the next day
- Packing school/work snacks or lunches
- Jotting down your to-do list
- One quiet cleaning task
TIP: evenings may be the time of day you usually connect with your partner. Don’t fill this time up with a BUNCH of things to do, you are probably really tired already!
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” link_font_size=”19px” link_line_height=”1.6em” ul_font_size=”19px” ul_line_height=”1.5em” ol_font_size=”19px” ol_line_height=”1.6em” quote_font_size=”19px” quote_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”28px” header_2_line_height=”1.6em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_3_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_3_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]
3. Have a Consistent Morning Routine.
I know, we just talked about the evening lol. The mornings are important too!
I have a great post that breaks down my morning routine formula.
In reviewing all the awesome SAHM schedules below, I noticed that a lot of them have a little breakfast routine, where the kids have a quiet activity before or after breakfast. (coloring, video, etc.) This stretches out the independent time, and can give you some freedom to empty the dishwasher, or chop up some veggies for the next snack time.
Are you able to wake before the kids? Early mornings are great for:
- Reading,
- Meal prep,
- Exercise,
- Journaling
- A quiet breakfast,
- Squeezing in some work, etc.
I personally use most of my early morning time to work each day. I try my hardest to put the laptop & phone away during the day.
Plus, I cannot concentrate on work when I can hear my kids! It’s weird, but even if they are laughing, if I hear them my brain automatically drops what I was thinking and pays attention to them. It is so frustrating!
TIP: The most important part of my morning routine right now, is eating something green right away. Any green vegetable. Once the day starts and everyone is awake, I am way less likely to take time to make healthy food for myself.
Getting that head start with a healthy vegetable right away, sets the tone for the rest of the day and motivates me to keep making those healthy choices (exercise, a positive attitude, etc.).

4. Discover The Activity Breaks in Your Child’s Day.
Find your “margins.” These are the time slots where you can squeeze 15 minutes or so of work, quick dinner prep, or one of the tasks on your “top three” list.
Can you wake up before the kids, or take time after they are asleep or while they are napping? Can they watch a 90-minute movie after a really active morning?
Keep an eye out for any small patterns you notice, you can use them to your advantage. For example, if you regularly feel motivated to get cleaning or work done around 11am, you can plan an activity before then that you know will tire the kids out. That way, they are more likely to either nap, or agree to a movie or other quiet time.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” link_font_size=”19px” link_line_height=”1.6em” ul_font_size=”19px” ul_line_height=”1.5em” ol_font_size=”19px” ol_line_height=”1.6em” quote_font_size=”19px” quote_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”28px” header_2_line_height=”1.6em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_3_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_3_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]
5. Use Shortcuts to Simplify Recurring Tasks.
Shortcuts are the best! They drastically reduce the number of decisions you have to make in a day. Decisions take time, and we want to save time.
Here are some examples:
- Have groceries you use frequently (rice, pasta, sauce, apple juice) on automatic reorder (I use amazon prime/fresh)
- Leave portioned-out snacks in a place your kids can reach them
- Have “theme days” for breakfast (ex. oatmeal Mondays, egg Tuesdays, waffle Wednesdays)
- Use parental controls to automatically turn electronics off if your children have a screen time limit
For more ideas, here is my post on how to simplify life at home.

6. Have an Actual Schedule.
Like I said before, simply having the most important tasks and events on your schedule can help give structure to your day. This way, you aren’t constantly “deciding” what to do next. (See what I did there? It’s another shortcut! Too many decisions wastes too much time!)
But, don’t forget that “getting things done” isn’t the point of your day. The point is living your life with your family. It’s being there for them emotionally, teaching them, having fun, and setting good examples.
Make it a priority to think about what you want your ideal day to look like. How would it go, and how would it make you happy? Put those ideas in your schedule too.
Below are the schedules of 30(!) stay at home moms to check out for some serious inspiration!
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” link_font_size=”19px” link_line_height=”1.6em” ul_font_size=”19px” ul_line_height=”1.5em” ol_font_size=”19px” ol_line_height=”1.6em” quote_font_size=”19px” quote_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”28px” header_2_line_height=”1.6em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_3_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_3_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]
7. Leave Some Room in Your Schedule for Flexibility.
Paisley Noel, a stay at home mom and the voice behind the natural living blog Mama’s Unpredictable Journey, prefers to keep the cleaning part of her schedule less rigid. She says, “It’s not always the same day each week that I do my ‘house chores.’ I try to stay flexible so if it’s nice one day, we can make an impromptu park day or just spend it outside at home playing in the dirt, doing bubbles, sidewalk chalk, or getting soaked in the water hose.”
Pick a task or category of your day that you would feel comfortable switching around if need be. When an opportunity for family fun comes along, you’ll already feel fine about putting that task off for a bit, instead of worrying about trying to fit the fun into a strict time slot.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” link_font_size=”19px” link_line_height=”1.6em” ul_font_size=”19px” ul_line_height=”1.5em” ol_font_size=”19px” ol_line_height=”1.6em” quote_font_size=”19px” quote_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”28px” header_2_line_height=”1.6em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_3_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_3_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]
8. Let Everyone Help With The Chores.
The burden should not fall only on you, mama. This is not just YOUR house. Those are not YOUR dishes, that’s not YOUR floor, it’s everyone’s. It’s the family’s house, and everyone helps out.
Kids don’t have to be school-age to help out, either. In nursery school, kids as young as two years old somehow magically figure out how to put things away after they are done. They know where their jackets go, and where their lunchboxes go after they are finished eating.
The name of the game is repetition. Does it take a long time for a toddler to learn things? Of course! But, as long as you are consistent, the day will come when they are surprising you by grabbing a broom after dinner’s cleared.
The cleaning won’t be done exactly like you would do it, but does it really, really matter?

9. Sprinkle in Simple Acts of Gratitude.
Sometimes I think about other families and wish my life were that easy, with that many vacations, or that housekeeper or whatever.
But, I’ve learned that no matter what it looks like on the outside, everyone has problems we don’t see. Practicing some gratitude goes a very long way toward getting rid of those negative thoughts that can sometimes bring down your (and everyone else’s) day:
- Start your day with a short, uplifting affirmation or scripture
- If you don’t have the time to sit and journal, you can also use one sheet of notes in your planner to jot down three things you are grateful for each morning
- I like to use the calendar section of my planner sometimes to write down one good thing that happened each day. It’s an instant gratitude journal!
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://livinglifeasmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Month-Spread-with-gratitude-journal.jpg” alt=”Month Spread with gratitude journal” title_text=”Month Spread with gratitude journal” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” link_font_size=”19px” link_line_height=”1.6em” ul_font_size=”19px” ul_line_height=”1.5em” ol_font_size=”19px” ol_line_height=”1.6em” quote_font_size=”19px” quote_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”28px” header_2_line_height=”1.6em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_3_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_3_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]
10. Make Sure You Are Exercising.
Regular exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your family. When you exercise, you are:
- Helping to keep your heart and immune system working at their best,
- Increasing your overall energy levels, which help to keep your day running smoothly, and
- Setting a good example for your kids to care for themselves.
Here is my post with some workouts you can easily do at home.
TIP: If you are playing with your kids and broke a sweat, that counts as exercise in my book!

11. Use a Planner to Help Organize Your Tasks and Events.
I have been using planners consistently since my last year in college. I was all over the place before I started using them, and I’ve never looked back!
I made this video about my 2021 planner lineup (I used 3 planners that year!). If you find it useful, please give it a like!
Here are some of my posts about how I use a planner to help keep me organized:

12. Use Alarms, Timers and/or Reminders Throughout the Day.
Sometimes, writing a task into the calendar or putting it in my phone isn’t enough. I see the note, say to myself, “Oh yeah, I have to do that today,” and never think about it again.
Instead, now I use my phone’s alarm and snooze features to actually ring at certain times of day to get me to actually do what I have to do.
If the alarm sounds and I can’t do the thing right that second, I hit “snooze.” If I can do it, I do it first, then hit “dismiss.”
Here are some examples of how I use these during my day:
Alarm with snooze function: to sound off when it is time to wake up, leave the house, make a phone call, etc:

13. Be Happy with Doing Less.
There’s a lot of “busy work” that parents sometimes feel NEEDS to be done to keep the house running. Some of it is necessary, but if you really sit and think, “Why am I doing this?” there is a chance that most of it is just wasting time.
I have a great post on how to plan your week to be productive. In it, I talk about how to categorize your tasks so you DROP the tasks that are not helping you in your day.
“It’s very important to prioritize. I know, for me, my family comes first. That makes every decision very easy.”
