Who doesn’t love a clean, organized home?

But….

One of the biggest things that holds me back from getting my house organized is where to start.

Even when I say to myself, “okay, I’m going to organize the cabinets,” the second I think that, my mind jumps to:

  • Oh, I need a bunch of new things to replace the old things first…
  • I’ll do it on garbage day so my garbage can doesn’t get filled up…
  • what if my mom wants some of this food, I’ll wait until she visits…

I just completely shut down the idea that a small project can actually be small and easy.  My brain immediately tries to convince me it’s actually super-complicated and cannot be done right now.

Sometimes I just have to tell myself out loud not to listen to that nay-saying voice.

That’s why I came up with small, easy home organizing ideas & projects you can bang out one day this weekend.  In a few weeks you’ll be looking at a sparkling, neat and organized home!

Pre-Organizing Checklist:

Make a designated place in your home for donations of any kind.  There is one box in my house that is ready 24/7 for housing donations.  I also keep several plastic bags, scrap paper, scotch tape and a permanent marker in there as well, for labeling where each donation is going.

Start collecting bread bag clips from your sliced bread and twisties for when you get to #4 (organizing your cords).  They make free and easy cord labels and holders.

Other Organizing Supplies:

  • Measuring tape for measuring out any shelf space (height, width and depth) in case you need to purchase storage bins.
  • Trash bags for garbage.
  • A laundry basket or tote bag to throw in any items that belong in other parts of the house, much easier to transport.
  • Paper & pen for jotting down any items that need to be replaced or purchased, or any measurements that need to be remembered
  • Swiffer or a microfiber cloth for the shelves.
  • Vacuum or dust buster for those corners.

2. Organize Your Pantry

Take everything out, and remove any items that:

  • Are expired
  • Do not belong
  • You are definitely NOT eating and can be donated or thrown away

Wipe down the whole area top to bottom, & vacuum the floor.

Make a list of any items that are running low and need to be repurchased.

Make a 2nd list of any foods that are almost expired, you’ll use them later!

Replace your items by heaviest toward the bottom, to lightest toward the top.

Grab this tiered can organizer – my #1 absolute best Amazon purchase!  I hated picking up each can trying to remember what I had in my pantry, now I can see everything at once.

Take your “almost expired list” and google “easy [ingredient] recipe” for each item.   Try a new recipe & use them up this week!

3. Deep Clean Your Bathroom

I owe a big chunk of my cleanliness to this book: The Lost Art of Housecleaning, by Jan Dougherty.  The book is cheap & very easy to read & follow.

Reading it made me realize how much hairspray & gunk get stuck to the tile walls in the bathroom!  Grime central.  I hardly ever properly cleaned the regular tile walls, outside of the shower.  Let’s do it!

The book has a really detailed method of cleaning, but this weekend let’s cover the basics & give your bathroom a scrub down:

Take everything out, and remove any items that:

  • Are expired
  • Do not belong
  • You are definitely NOT using anymore and can be donated or thrown away

Rinse the sticky stuff off the toothpaste tubes, soap dispensers, shampoo bottles, etc. under hot water.

Remove & wash the trash basket & decorative knick-knacks.

Remove & wash any lighting fixtures, light bulbs & fan vents.

Dust/vacuum the ceiling corners, and then the baseboards & floor.

A Word About the Bathroom Walls: They aren’t going to get clean with Windex.  There’s built-up soap, toothpaste & hairspray debris on it.  You need a degreaser like Krud Kutter (its great non-toxic & recommended in the book).

Clean the shower/tub, spray faucets & fixtures with vinegar & wipe dry with microfiber cloth.

Wash or toss the shower curtain.

Clean the toilet AND the wall behind/on top of the toilet.

Clean each wall’s tiles with degreaser.

Wash and replace towels and area rugs.

*If you need organizing caddies under your sink, these acrylic stackable drawers are terrific, they:

  • are easily washable if something spills and
  • keep the dust off of your stuff.

There are a bunch of sizes on Amazon, so definitely check them out.

4. Organize Your Cords

The areas behind my TVs and computers are atrocious!  Here’s where your bread clips and ties are going to come in handy!  They’re FREE for goodness sake, there’s no need to waste your label maker cartridges on this project.

Label the cords BEFORE you unplug them! Place one label nearest to the electrical outlet (where you plug it into the wall), and a second label closest to the electronic device.

Turn off the electronics.  Wipe/vacuum any dust away.

Unplug, dust & recoil one plug at a time, using either bread twisties, or I actually love these Velcro straps, they are more discreet.

5. Vertical Storage/Hanging Plants

Vertical storage is an organizing method that really works well in any and every situation.  There are limitless options out there to organize all the rooms in your house:

On another note, one of my favorite ways to add useful décor without taking up useful space, is hanging one or two plants.  Go for air-purifying plants, like the peace lily and mother-in-law’s tongue/snake plant.

Conclusion

Organizing your home doesn’t have to be a crazy-long, drawn out production.  Taking anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, once a weekend, will go a long way.  Before you know it, you’ll have a neat, clean, organized home.
