Are you having trouble coming up with that “just right” morning routine?  In this post we’re going to break down the formula for a successful morning routine.  Let’s start our days with some intention and help them work for us!

What’s a Good Morning Routine?

So, a good morning routine is going to be effective, right?  It’s going to help you be productive on that day.

Now, productive doesn’t mean “all the things get done that day.”  Productive means that the important stuff gets done, leaving time for what you want your life to actually include.

You can decide to do your important stuff during your morning routine (like anything specifically health related, or getting work done that directly relates to you bringing in money), to free up day time for your “my amazing life” stuff, whatever that is to you. (travel, yoga, learning a new language or skill, uninterrupted kids time, etc.)

Or, you can decide to do your “my amazing life” stuff (journaling, taking a walk, meditation, learning a skill) during your morning routine, to feel accomplished and satisfied, and ready to tackle your important stuff during the day.

Lastly, you can decide to do your “busy” stuff (laundry, cleaning, answering emails, meal prep, sorting mail, paying bills) during your morning routine, to get that crap over with!

Either way, your daily routine overall should be a combination of “important” things and “my amazing life” things, with “busy” things on autopilot, or given to someone else to do wherever possible.

Your important stuff should also be during times when our energy and focus are highest.  If that’s first thing in the morning, that may be a good time to schedule work.

Morning Routine Maker: The Best Morning Routine Formula for Success

No matter what morning routine you come up with, any routine that requires you to change something about your current routine, needs some secret sauce to be successful.

And that morning routine formula “secret sauce” has TWO ingredients….

  1. Your morning routine needs an overall plan for what categories you want to include (your “important,” “my amazing life,” or “busy” stuff); and
  2. That routine needs to include habits that connect with some of the positive habits you already have.

Let’s go through each of these ingredients, and build your awesome new morning routine……

#1. The Morning Routine Plan

We’re at the point where we are thinking about our Morning Routine List.  We’re ready to jump in, now what the heck are we going to do tomorrow morning?

So, the broad answer here is (we’ll get specific in a sec), you do what feels good for you.  If you are energized and focused in the morning, important money-making work is the way to go.

If you are annoyed that you’re up so early, try either some mindless busy-work, or a quick workout to get you pepped up.

Maybe you are enjoying the peace and quiet?  Try some journaling, yoga, meditation or reading.

Now more specifically………

There ARE a few items that are awesome fits for any morning routine.  I came across a Podcast episode by Russ & Mika Perry, talking about a portion of a program Russ teaches called the “Core Four.”

Russ & Mika go into detail about how our life categories are in somewhat of a hierarchy, where if we are not performing well in one category, it most likely means we have work to do in the category before it.

The categories go like this:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://livinglifeasmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Small-Habits-Core-Four-Life-Categories.jpg” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.0.11″ global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.11″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.7em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia|700|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

This podcast gives a little bit of a framework, or a plan (love me some plans!) of where to start working in each of your “Core Four” categories.

Russ’ message is, you can’t be a productive person in the world without taking care of yourself first.  Your mind and body are the foundation on which your relationships and business stand.  They have to be strong.

Russ suggests checking these eight items off your list, in this order, preferably first thing in the morning.  There are two tasks for each of your “Core Four” categories:

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.0.11″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.0.11″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.11″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.7em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia|700|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Body:

  1. Exercise
  2. Eat something green

Being:

  1. Meditate
  2. Journaling

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.0.11″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.0.11″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.11″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.7em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia|700|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Balance:

5. Show of gratitude to immediate family – leaving an encouraging note, text or email

6. Show of gratitude to someone outside the family, preferably a someone having to do with your business (employee, peer, co-worker, etc.)

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.0.11″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.11″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.7em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia|700|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Business:

7. Learn something (read, watch a video, take a course*)

8. Teach what you learned to someone (as simple as talking about what you learned with a friend or your kids)

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.29.3″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.5″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.7em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia|700|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Remember to go in order!  Don’t jump to your business if you haven’t taken care of your body yet.  Think of this list like a totem pole.  If you start at the top, the bottom is going to crumble, and the whole thing falls anyway.

*If you’re wondering where to learn something new for not a ton of money, Skillshare has a ton of classes and they let you try them out for FREE for two weeks if you sign up through that link!  I’ve been taking the Thomas Frank productivity classes (of course lol), and next I really want to work on my handwriting for my planners.

#2.  Get the New Morning Routine Habits to Stick to the Current Habits

That is kind of a complicated sentence, so let me break it down more…..

You want to add some new items to your routine, and take off some crappy ones.  But, your crappy ones are comfortable and easy (they’ve become habits), and hard to stop.

  • Waking up at 8am? Easy! Waking up at 5am? Not easy.
  • Grabbing breakfast at the store? Easy! Making oatmeal at home? Not as easy.
  • Scrolling Instagram in bed? Too easy!  Not touching your phone until 30 minutes after you wake up? What kind of medieval torture is this?

Now, your brain loves you and wants you to be happy.  Why would your brain let you change something that’s comfortable for you, without a fight?  Think about this….

The subconscious part of our brain looks for the easy way out.  That part of our brain is all about the short-term, immediate benefits.  It remembers what feels good, or comfortable, and prompts your body to continue doing those things.  Like hitting the snooze button, for example.

It’s easier for your brain to repeat the past.  It already knows what the consequences are (comfort).

It’s our conscious brain that wants us to, for example, wake up earlier, because it is more logical and KNOWS that doing so will have long-term benefits, for the rest of our day.

So, we have to sort of trick our subconscious brain into doing what we logically know is better for us long-term, instead of prompting us to take the immediate satisfaction route.

How do we do this? Habit stacking!!!!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.29.3″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.11″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.7em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia|700|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

What is “Habit Stacking?”

Habit Stacking is basically attaching a New Habit you want to start, with a Positive Habit you already have.  By Positive Habit, I mean a habit you either enjoy doing, or at least don’t hate doing.

Here is an easy formula to help understand this:

Before or After I [Positive Habit], I [New Habit]**

For example, After I Use the Bathroom, I Will Do 20 Pushups.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.29.3″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.11″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”19px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.7em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia|700|||||||” header_2_text_color=”#cc1c9a” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

How do you build consistent habits with Habit Stacking?

Make your New Habit small, make it easy to do in 1 or 2 steps, and make it the same frequency as the positive habit you are attaching it to (meaning, don’t attach a new daily habit to a positive once-per-week habit).

**BTW, if you are a total noob with habits (and habit stacking), I HIGHLY recommend a book called Atomic Habits by James Clear.

This book really helped me see how my brain tries to force me to do what I’ve always done.  It has simple, straightforward instructions for creating new habits, and dropping old, bad habits.  Life-changing!

Thanks to Atomic Habits for inspiring the above formula.

How do I Start a Morning Routine?

Take it easy at first! Pick two habits you want to start implementing into your routine, and test them out.  Any more than that right away, and you might get overwhelmed and end up not doing anything

Having trouble consistently doing your routine?  Try a habit tracker like “Don’t Break the Chain.”  You can even draw a chain on a piece of paper to color in each day, if it helps.

Basically, for every morning you have your routine, your “chain” gets longer.  The longer your chain, the less you’ll want to break it by skipping a day.

Morning Routine Hacks

I have a few morning routine hacks that really help me get squared away for the rest of the day:

  1. Put a load of laundry in the washing machine the night before, and set it to delay like 8 hours, so it starts washing one hour before you wake up. When you wake up, throw the clothes in the dryer and start your SECOND load of the day!
  2. If you’re an at-home exerciser like me, exercise first thing, in your pajamas! I don’t need fancy workout stuff at home, and there’s less laundry.
  3. Towards the end of my mornings sometimes, I’ll stop and ask myself: Could anything be done the night before instead? For example, my kids’ school snacks don’t need to be refrigerated, I can easily pack them the night before.  I also try my best to pick out the next day’s outfit the night before.

Here’s my YouTube video all about having easier mornings by hacking your evening routine.  If the video was helpful, please consider giving it a like!

How Long Should Your Morning Routine Be?

As long as the amount of time you have for it!  It all depends on how early you are able to wake up without also waking everyone else.

Good Morning, Good Life, by Amy Landino – This one is brand-new and full of useful info to put your own routine together.  Amy is all about not being told what to do, but just the same, there are plenty of creative morning routine ideas packed into this one.  *Note: This is Amy’s very first book, and there are some glaring grammar and editing mistakes on the printed version, so if you love audible,  grab the audiobook version.  The book is still VERY helpful.
