I have been using some variation of this shopping plan/system as my “Master Grocery List” maker, for as long as I can remember.

I do all of my outside shopping on one single day each week.  I hate having to waste time driving multiple days a week.

I used to love post-its to keep track of my shopping lists.  But, I kept losing them because they would stick to my wallet or glasses, and fly out of my bag.

This printable template keeps my list for every store, in one place.

This list is so simple, it’s kind of nuts.

It’s color-coordinated, and has plenty of room to list anything I could possibly need to buy in a week!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://livinglifeasmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Master-Grocery-List-Picture.jpg” align=”center” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.27.3″ border_radii=”on|40px|40px|40px|40px”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.6em” ul_font=”||||||||” ul_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||”]

(I also have a variation of this shopping system in my Printable Packing List bundle.  It’s great for jotting down last-minute pre-trip necessities!)

I work on this list during the week and when my shopping day comes, I bring it with me, or take a picture of it if I have to.

Pro Tip: I like writing in pencil, or using these erasable pens, because I’m adding to my shopping list throughout the week.  Plans may change where we are not eating at home, or maybe plans were cancelled and I need to squeeze in an extra meal.  It is much easier to just quickly erase something than it is to scribble & cross out.  Cross-outs are messy and pull your focus away, creating unintended stress.

I wrote in pen today so you can see it clearly!!

Here’s How to Use This Master Grocery List:

#1. Pick your shopping day.  Tuesdays are the best day, since most store deliveries happen on Monday.  Chances are, the freshest produce & meat will be out by Tuesday morning.

#2. Keep your budget in mind.  I like to write the total amount of spending I am shooting for, at the top.  It’s just a number to keep in the front of my mind while I’m looking at prices.

Writing my budget amount at the top of my list has been helpful quite a few times.  It pushes me to take an extra second to check the prices – maybe you usually grab string beans, but the asparagus is on sale this week!

#3. If I need to keep anything in mind or focus on anything, like:

  • winter is coming – and you should look out for snow gear on sale,
  • summer is coming – and camp requires one-piece swimsuits
  • family is coming to visit overnight – and extra food is necessary

I write it in “Week’s Focus,” just to keep it on my mind while I am out.

#4. Throughout the week, I fill in the items I plan on buying, along with the store I want to grab them from:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://livinglifeasmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Master-Grocery-List-Items-and-Store.jpg” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.27.3″ border_radii=”on|40px|40px|40px|40px”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”22px” text_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||” min_height=”365px”]

As you can see, I usually shop at Target, Whole Foods, Stop & Shop (and Costco once every 3 months).

PRO TIP: Bunch together 3-4 similar items per line.  If I am buying more than one item from a store’s section, I will bunch those items together on one line.

For example, Strawberries, Blueberries, Grapes can go on one section.

This keeps everything together so you aren’t doing laps in the store, that’s the worst.

As things come up, different items from the same store will be on different areas of the list.  That’s where the color coding comes in!

#5. At the bottom of the list, I assign a color to each store with some highlighters:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://livinglifeasmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Master-Grocery-List-Color-Coded-Store-Legend.jpg” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.27.3″ border_radii=”on|40px|40px|40px|40px”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”22px” text_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||”]

#6. Then I go back up to my shopping list and highlight the items according to each store’s color:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://livinglifeasmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Master-Grocery-List-Items-Color-Coded.jpg” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.27.3″ border_radii=”on|40px|40px|40px|40px”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”22px” text_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||”]

Now it’s SUPER easy to bring just one list with you, instead of a list for each store.

Even better, when you are in a store, you can easily see which items you need to grab.  When I’m in Target for example, I will buy all the GREEN items!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://livinglifeasmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Master-Grocery-List-Completed.jpg” align=”center” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.27.3″ border_radii=”on|40px|40px|40px|40px”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Georgia||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”22px” text_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font=”Georgia||||||||” header_2_font_size=”30px” header_2_line_height=”1.7em” header_3_font=”Georgia||||||||”]

I hope this shopping/grocery list is helpful to you! I’ve tried using my phone, I’ve tried using Trello, and I always find myself coming back to this printable.  It’s easy and it WORKS!
